Steel Retainer Lightweight Racing Beehive Spring Kit and Components for Harley-Davidson® Milwaukee-Eight™ 2017-2021 

By taking advantage of the latest development in valve spring wire chemistry and manufacturing techniques, KPMI® has developed ovate wire Beehive style springs that will live and Perform at a high level in Harley Davidson applications. By coupling these developments with strict KPMI® design protocols and employing multiple design, simulation, and FEA analysis software, we were we able to overcome the torsional stresses unique to ovate wire springs that previously severely limited their operating parameters. This was critical, as there are nearly 100 camshaft part numbers available , these applications. KPMI® Beehive Springs are progressively wound using Kobe Super-Clean chrome silicon based wire that is heat treated and shot peened.  The hardened steel basewashers included in these kits are designed to locate the spring and control lateral movement. KPMI® made OEM replacement seals are included for a more complete performance valvetrain solution.

Tech Bulletin- Superseded Kawasaki® and Suzuki® Valves

KPMI® has several Kawasaki® and Suzuki® valve designs whereas we have selected a proprietary material and heat treatment process that enhances the durability of the valve face to retard valve face recession.  For several years now, this material and heat treatment process was coupled with the KPMI® Black Diamond™ surface treatment.  During the heat treatment stage of manufacturing, the Black Diamond™ coating would come under attack and suffer oxidation and corrosion, leaving a new valve looking used.  Although this combination of processes did achieve a superior stainless one piece valve that would prove to have a highly durable valve face, the valve heads had an unaesthetic appearance (see Figure 1 and 2).  Recently, the KPMI® engineering department completed design reviews for all valves with these issues.  The solution was to move away from the KPMI® Black Diamond™ treatment and introduce the well-recognized and proven KPMI® White Diamond® coating and then post process after heat treatment to leave the head of the valve in a beautiful polished stainless finish (see Figure 1 and 2). We hope you are as excited as we are to provide you with these enhanced valve designs that we will be introducing in a superseding fashion over the next few months.

These high quality replacement springs have been designed to exceeds the OEM specifications by fitting precisely on the spring shoulder diameter of both the OEM retainers, and KPMI® H.T. Steel retainers (P/N 60-61701).
This kit also includes H.T. Steel basewashers in order to achieve a precision fitment on the large end of our beehive spring which, better controls the lateral motion of the spring, ensuring longer life and less wear on the valvetrain components.
KPMI® has gone a step further and specified the latest in spring materials and processing, an extremely robust design that will last longer than anything currently on the market
Unique features of this spring include is beehive variable rate wind to reduce the chances of spring surge due to cam harmonics, Super-Clean Chrome Silicon wire with additional Vanadium and Nickel added, increased strenth, and a gas nitrided and double shot peened finish, greater fatigue life Each basewasher has been engineered to maximize its mechanical strength using FEA design software.


By utilizing FEA software, it was possible to take advantage of the increased strength and wear resistance of a heat treated steel retainer, while reducing its mass to within grams of a comparable titanium retainer. These retainers are intended as an OEM replacement and are completely compatible with the OEM springs, keepers, and shims. The spring shoulder diameter has been designed to match the OEM retainer and spring as well as KPMI's beehive spring (P/N 60-61700), making this retainer your high performance OEM alternative.


Since 1938, KPMI® has taken great pride in our ability to design innovative performance improvements for valvetrains. This innovative ability has never been more apparent than with the development of the high tech lightweight racing valve spring kits for the incredibly stressed and torturous environment in today’s high revving 4-stroke engines. The challenge to engineer a valvetrain that would outperform OEM systems, that in some cases included titanium components, was not an easy one. This task would require the concentrated efforts of every member of KPMI®’s design team. It was apparent early on that an OEM style spring with a bit more pressure was not going to be the complete answer for these engines. Working together as a team enabled KPMI® to evolve with a “unified system” approach. In fact, these innovative high performance lightweight valve spring kits, would not only outperform factory parts, but outlive them as well. Each KPMI® spring kit is designed for its specific application, taking into account several critical parameters including; cam profiles, harmonics, natural frequency of the springs, valvetrain mass, required pressure, wire stress, fatigue life, and engine rpm, just to name a few! Today KPMI® proudly offers complete high performance lightweight valve spring kits for a host of applications.

We choose to use the copper based C63000 nickel-aluminum bronze as a material to make our bronze valve guides because of its ideal characteristics for the application. The 5% nickel content provides superior resistance to wear, and the approximately 80 percent copper content delivers outstanding heat conductivity. KPMI® guide profiles are designed to have minimal effect on the airstream while maintaining critical cross sectional thickness in high temperature areas, which promotes high performance and endurance.

​​All KPMI® Black Diamond™ Stainless steel valves are impregnated by a special German process to a depth of .002, with a surface build up of .0002. This Black Diamond process improves wear properties, reduces friction, and provides resistance to corrosion and wear that is superior to chrome and nickel electrolysis plating. Each valve is designed using Finite Element Analysis software, and profiles are tested on our computerized flow bench. Black Diamond Valves are lightweight, strong, one piece forgings with profiles that provide excellent flow characteristics.

KPMI® Cylinder Studs are made from 180,000 psi yield strength, fine grain, heat treated, aircraft grade alloy steel.  When you want a stud that meets proof-stress and maximizes clamping force, look no further.  KPMI® “rolls” the threads, heat treats and then centerless grinds the entire body of the stud. Rolling the threads creates the toughest and strongest thread possible and centerless grinding removes notch sensitivity.  Further, the case end thread is designed to have a slight interference fit to minimize distortion and maintain good thread contact during torque procedure. The final process for all KPMI® Studs is to encase the entire stud with premium corrosion resistant treatment of Black Oxide. Each KPMI® spring kit is designed for its specific application, taking into account several critical parameters including; cam profiles, harmonics, natural frequency of the springs, valvetrain mass, required pressure, wire stress, fatigue life, and engine rpm, just to name a few!

Lightweight Racing Spring Kit and Components for Suzuki® King Quad's 700-750 2005-2020

The challenge to engineer a valvetrain that would outperform OEM systems, that in some cases included titanium components, was not an easy one. This task would require the concentrated efforts of every member of KPMI®’s design team. It was apparent early on that an OEM style spring with a bit more pressure was not going to be the complete answer for these engines. Working together as a team enabled KPMI® to evolve with a “unified system” approach. In fact, these innovative high performance lightweight valve spring kits, would not only outperform factory parts, but outlive them as well. We choose to use the copper based C63000 nickel-aluminum bronze as a material to make our bronze valve guides because of its ideal characteristics for the application. The 5% nickel content provides superior resistance to wear, and the approximately 80 percent copper content delivers outstanding heat conductivity. KPMI® guide profiles are designed to have minimal effect on the airstream while maintaining critical cross sectional thickness in high temperature areas, which promotes high performance and endurance.

​​All KPMI® Black Diamond™ Stainless steel valves are impregnated by a special German process to a depth of .002, with a surface build up of .0002. This Black Diamond process improves wear properties, reduces friction, and provides resistance to corrosion and wear that is superior to chrome and nickel electrolysis plating. Each valve is designed using Finite Element Analysis software, and profiles are tested on our computerized flow bench. Black Diamond Valves are lightweight, strong, one piece forgings with profiles that provide excellent flow characteristics.
